研究领域:
 近年来,逐渐凝练出“推动经典分类学向现代形态分类学(利用形态特征的数字化与数据挖掘方法来改造分类学)转化”这一宏大的科学目标。为实现这一目标,需要通过形态学的现代化再造(四个现代化)来实现,即数据获取的现代化、性状模拟的现代化、数据分析的现代化、物种鉴定的现代化等四个方面。

数据获取的现代化
我们与合作者共同提出了生物结构微纳尺度三维形态特征获取与定量分析的整合性解决方案。第一,我们与中科院深圳先进技术研究院已合作研发了显微CT装备,该仪器已在动物所安装完毕且使用正常。第二,目前正在与中科院西安光机所合作研发结构光照明显微镜,该仪器在微小动物形态的高分辨快速成像方面的应用,已入选“2016年度中国光学重要进展”提名。

性状模拟的现代化
利用同步辐射、显微CT、计算机三维重建和有限元等方法,对动物形态特征的模拟及功能解读开展了创新性研究。例如,发现了昆虫纲化石新目——奇翅目(Alienoptera)的确立(Bai et al. 2016, Gondwana Research),缅甸琥珀中发现的栉蚕支持冈瓦纳起源生物通过“欧洲扩散”假说扩散到劳亚古陆 (Oliveira et al. 2016, Current Biology),首次在琥珀中发现鸟类(Xing et al. 2016, Nature Comm.),首次在缅甸琥珀中发现恐龙(Xing et al. 2016, Current Biology);通过螳虫脩胸部肌肉重建,对新翅类系统发育关系进行推断;对金龟总科后翅关节骨片的三维形态变异进行分析,探讨了后翅关节的功能形态;对金龟前足胫节、上颚、后翅关节骨片等特征的三维形态进行有限元模拟,进而对其功能形态学进行定量模拟与分析。

数据分析的现代化
综合几何形态学、支序系统学等方法,对金龟和蛩蠊部分形态结构形态变异与进化进行了分析,发现了新的现象或有力证实了相关假说。例如,证实了后翅可作为系统发育重建的直接证据;发现了现生蛩蠊前胸背板明显比古生蛩蠊形态多样性低;蜣螂滚粪球行为除了对前胸背板、足等与滚粪球行为高度相关的外部结构具有显著影响外,还对众多内部形态结构具有广泛的影响;粪食性蜣螂可能起源于杂食性的祖先;白星花金龟前胸背板和鞘翅上的花斑,反映了地理种群间的形态距离。与中科院软件所合作研发几何形态学新软件,主要解决了多特征几何形态数据的整合问题。

物种鉴定的现代化
在核对了来自世界上大多数著名博物馆的大量定名标本和模式标本的基础上,对中国现生及古生金龟(蜣螂、犀金龟、长臂金龟、绢金龟、花金龟、锹甲和丽金龟等类群)和世界蛩蠊进行了分类学修订工作。完成中国动物志蜣螂亚科卷,发表了我国第2种蛩蠊、奇翅目(化石新目)、3个化石新科。

在上述分类学的基础上,利用几何形态学方法,基于世界2.7万种甲虫的前胸背板和鞘翅的外缘形态,证实连续性性状也承载了分类学信息,进而为物种自动鉴定系统的开发奠定了理论基础。再结合形态快速获取新仪器和多特征融合的新软件,将为可靠性高、兼容性好和实际应用场景多样的物种自动鉴定系统的研发向前推进了一大步。

目前利用大数据深度学习技术,初步搭建了世界鞘翅目昆虫智能分类系统(甲天下),网址为:http://beetle.ioz.ac.cn/。
